Kristof Van Tomme

Kristof Van Tomme is an open source strategist and architect. He is the CEO and co-founder of Pronovix, a company that builds developer portals in Drupal. He’s got a degree in bioengineering and is a regular speaker at technology conferences. For a few years now he’s been building bridges between the documentation, API and Drupal communities.

Democratizing developer experience

One of the biggest mistakes API teams can make is to build their APIs and devportal for “developers”, a mythical undifferentiated persona who is assumed to have a basic technical background. Even when devportal visitors were mostly developers, this was a dangerous assumption, but as APIs and developer portals mature, new audiences are getting interested in APIs that devportals need to address.

In this talk I want to present 2 trends that are impacting API programs, their documentation processes, and their devportal’s information architecture:
1. Business personas need to be able to understand the value of APIs (Make place for the suits). Practically that means you need to enable both technical and non-technical documentation consumption AND authoring experiences.
2. Different types of affordances (e.g. platform APIs, niche APIs, plugins, …) enable a wider range of devportal users to achieve technical outcomes (Everybody becomes a developer). Similar to the no-code/low-code trend in web development, there is an opportunity for less-technical people to achieve technical outcomes using digital interfaces.

In this presentation I want to show examples of both trends and explore what the implications are for DevRel programs.
